Editorial policy overview

This Editorial Policy governs how Rental Property Lab creates, reviews, and maintains content. It works alongside our Editorial Standards, Fact-Checking Statement, and Content Update Policy. Together they define the practices that make our guides, calculators, and templates trustworthy.

How we evaluate products

Rental Property Lab evaluates products — smart locks, thermostats, appliances, water heaters, tools, and landlord software — specifically for rental-property use, not as generic consumer reviews. We judge each product against criteria that matter to a landlord: durability under tenant wear, price, maintenance burden, warranty terms, tenant usability, installation difficulty, reliability, replacement cost, and total cost of ownership. We do not recommend products solely because they pay commissions, and we do not recommend products unrelated to rental property ownership.

Our evaluation labels

We use three clearly defined labels so readers always know what kind of work backs a recommendation. Lab Tested means we physically handled and used the product ourselves. Lab Analysis means our recommendation is based on research, specifications, manufacturer documentation, and our own calculations. Lab Comparison means we produced an editorial comparison of multiple products against a consistent set of rental-property criteria. We never apply the Lab Tested label to a product we have not physically handled.

What we never claim

We never invent experience, testing, reviews, statistics, credentials, testimonials, or expert quotes. We do not fabricate ratings, awards, prices, or download counts. Where we have not physically tested a product, we say so and use the appropriate label. Where a figure depends on a jurisdiction, a market, or a specific property, we say so rather than asserting a single universal answer.

Editorial independence

Our editorial content is independent of advertising, affiliate, and sponsorship relationships. Advertisers and affiliate partners do not review, approve, or influence content before publication. Revenue from advertising and affiliate links helps keep the resource library free, but it never determines which topics we cover or what we say about them. Authorship and accountability

Content is published under the Rental Property Lab Editorial Team byline, with a link to a page explaining what we publish and how we research it. The editorial team is not presented as a licensed professional, and we do not claim credentials, years of experience, or property ownership we cannot document. Where a genuine named human contributor writes for the site in future, they will be credited by name.

Standards for sources

We prefer primary and operating sources over secondary marketing content. Tax references are checked against current IRS Schedule E materials. Cost and lifespan figures are drawn from published manufacturer specifications and publicly available cost data. Where a source is named in context, we identify it. Where a rule varies by jurisdiction, we say so rather than asserting a single national answer.

Corrections and updates
